Artist’s Words:
This commission took me on one of the most amazing journeys I have ever traveled. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to know Matthew Axelson and James Suh through this commission. Working on the sculpture offered me the opportunity to meet these men, killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan, and know their dedication, honor, bravery, love of family and country, and incredible strength… of character, body and mind. In addition, Matthew’s parents, Donna and Corky Axelson, have enriched my life. Even through the loss of their son, they portray the same belief in humanity, strength and love as their son did during his all too brief life. The brotherhood of the Navy SEALs is impenetrable. That union and commitment is shown in the hip to shoulder, always connected and watchful stance, and how these guardians of freedom will be forever remembered.
